Marble
What is marble stone?
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is subjected to intense heat and pressure deep within the earth. Over time, the calcite crystals in the limestone recrystallise, producing a denser, finer-grained stone with the iconic veining marble is known for.
That veining is the result of mineral impurities - traces of clay, silt, sand and iron oxides - worked through the stone during its formation. No two marble slabs share the same vein pattern, which is why marble interiors feel so considered and personal.

Granite is igneous (formed from cooled magma); marble is metamorphic (formed from transformed limestone). Quartz
What is quartz stone?
Quartz worktops are engineered surfaces, not purely natural stone. They’re made by combining around 90-95% crushed natural quartz crystals with resins, polymers and pigments under heat and pressure. The result is a highly consistent, non-porous surface that takes its aesthetic cues from natural stone while offering significant practical advantages.
What is the difference between granite and quartz?
Granite is 100% natural stone; quartz is an engineered product made with natural minerals. Granite has natural variation in every slab; quartz is manufactured to be consistent. Granite requires periodic sealing; quartz is non-porous and requires no sealing. Both are extremely durable, but quartz generally offers more predictability, while granite offers more uniqueness.

Quartzite
What is quartzite?
Quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock formed when sandstone rich in quartz is subjected to extreme heat and pressure. Unlike engineered quartz, quartzite is 100% natural stone - quarried directly from the earth and fabricated into worktops without artificial enhancement.
What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?
Quartz is sometimes confused with quartzite, but they’re fundamentally different materials.
Quartz is an engineered product; quartzite is a natural stone. Quartzite is typically harder than quartz and more heat-resistant, making it a strong choice for kitchens. However, because it’s a natural stone, it’s porous and will need sealing, whereas engineered quartz does not.
Quartzite also tends to have a more unique, natural appearance - often with subtle movement and veining - compared to the manufactured consistency of quartz.

Porcelain
What is porcelain stone?
Porcelain worktops are made from refined clay minerals fired at very high temperatures - a process that produces a dense, hard and non-porous surface. Modern porcelain can be manufactured to replicate the look of natural stone, concrete, wood and more, often with a level of realism that makes it difficult to distinguish from the real thing.
Porcelain slabs for worktops are typically very thin - often 6mm to 12mm - and lightweight relative to natural stone, making them easier to handle and install in certain applications.

Slate
What is slate stone?
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from shale or mudstone under low-grade heat and pressure. The result is a dense, layered stone with a distinctive cleft texture and a depth of colour that ranges from charcoal black and blue-grey through to rich greens and purples, depending on the quarry of origin.
Slate has been used in British architecture for centuries - most familiarly on rooftops - but it’s increasingly sought after as a worktop and cladding material for both interior and exterior applications, valued for its texture and character.

Onyx
What is onyx stone?
Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony - a microcrystalline form of quartz - and one of the most visually dramatic stones available for interiors. Formed through the slow deposition of silica in gas cavities within lava, onyx develops its characteristic banding and translucency over geological timescales.
It has been used in architecture and decorative arts for thousands of years, and its combination of bold colour, strong banding and natural translucency makes it uniquely suited to statement interiors.

Where does onyx work best?

Natural stones like granite, marble, quartzite, slate, onyx and semi-precious stone require periodic sealing. Engineered quartz and porcelain are non-porous and need no sealing at all. If low maintenance is a priority, quartz and porcelain are the most straightforward choices.
What kind of use will the surface see?
